Small Steps to Childcare is a partnership transition model designed for students who are considering pursuing a career in Early Childhood education. The partnership is based on a model developed by Goodstart Early Learning Centres in Tamworth NSW.
Goodstart Early Learning Centres (Riverina) run the 6-8 week program which aims to provide Year 9 & 10 students with meaningful work experience, working within an operating childcare centre with children aged 0-5. The program was designed to suit students who have a real passion for working with children and want to gain experience working within a childcare environment.
Students experience the reality of modern employment practice by participating in a competitive application process and attending a job interview.
At the end of the placement, students are required to develop a resource which the host centre can reuse with the children.
The benefits of this program are:
- Students gain ‘real life’ experience working within a childcare environment
- Students with a passion for working with children increase their understanding of employer expectations within the workplace
- Students gain understanding of the recruitment process in obtaining employment
